Alive 'N' Kicking is a highly successful children’s lifestyle weight management service that helps overweight children and young people and their families to reach and maintain a healthier weight. The service provides age specific programmes for families with children aged between 5 to 18 years old. Each categorised programme is specifically designed to provide age appropriate messages, activities and behavioural change strategies that will benefit the whole family.

Our Age Appropriate Programs

Our Alive ‘N’ Kicking programmes are designed to support families and children within 3 different age ranges outlined below.

Infants & Juniors – Aged 5-11 Years Old

The most important course for parents and care-givers with young children is our infant and junior programme. This programme is primarily focused on the parents/caregivers role and responsibilities in their child’s health, with a simultaneous component of fun activity and play for the children.

The Infants and Juniors programme is a 12 week course, consisting of weekly 90 minute group sessions with other parents/caregivers. Educational Weekly Topics include:

  • Understanding Healthy Eating
  • Sugary Drinks
  • Healthy School Food
  • Reducing Sedentary Behaviour
  • 5 A Day Food Tasting

The aims of the group sessions are to educate and guide parents in ensuring that healthy lifestyle habits for the whole family are prioritised. The group meetings act to empower parents and give them the necessary skills to ensure their children grow up healthy and happy.

Children also have the opportunity to come to an additional drop off physical activity session, which runs weekly throughout the 12 week programme. These sessions give parents the option to drop their children off for an hour of physical activity in the form of fun games and challenges as well as making new friends who are just like them.

Seniors – Aged 12-15 Years Old

The seniors approach forms a similar 12 weekly group programme, however the young person’s will be actively involved in all workshops relating to health, nutrition and weight management alongside with their parents. The aim of this programme is to encourage parents and children to take responsibility for their health and lifestyle.

Weekly topics are tailored to the group and ensure that the young people are engaged in the learning element of this programme. Weekly topics unique to the Young Persons programme include:

  • Community Physical Activity Taster Sessions
  • Group Shopping Experience
  • Portion Distortion

The seniors will also have the opportunity to attend an additional weekly drop off physical activity session, which may take place at the regular programme venue or some sessions may be delivered at a gym facility to encourage the use of leisure facilities available to older children.

Young Persons – Aged 16+ Years Old

The Young Persons programme is a flexible programme, easily adaptable to suit the group of young people you are working with. The programme is written to be able to be delivered to smaller groups who may require some one to one support during the group sessions.

Groups who have benefited from this programme include Young Carers, PHE College Groups and Health and Social Care College Groups.

The main objectives of this programme is for young people to gain the knowledge and confidence to change current habits and behaviors through the education of healthy eating, weight management and personal empowerment.

Participants meet once a week for a 1 hour nutrition workshop. Where facilities allow a physical activity component, a 30 minute exercise session can be included to make the session 1 hour 30 in total. The weekly topics are:

  • Energy Balance & The Eatwell Plate
  • Snacking, Fast Food & Sugary Drinks
  • Reduced E-Play & Healthy School Food
  • Understanding Food Labels & Portion Distortion
  • 5 Eating Points a Day & Sleep
  • Future Plan & Graduation

An additional weekly physical activity session is a popular component of this programme as young people are encouraged to attend a gym circuit style physical activity session organized with our exercises specialist at a local gym facility.
